5 Common ChatGPT Cliches to Avoid in Your AI-Created Content
We all know using AI tools for content creation can change the game for solopreneurs.
But it’s really easy to fall into the trap of sounding like a robot wrote your copy!
If you’re new to using ChatGPT, you might be including common words and phrases in your AI-assisted copy that are becoming increasingly recognizable as “written by AI”.
So today, I’m sharing the common tropes to avoid when using Chat GPT in your content creation process - and especially to write copy.

Avoiding AI Tropes Maintains Your Brand’s Authenticity
Running into common AI cliches in our copy doesn’t mean we should just stop using tools like ChatGPT for content creation or copywriting altogether. 🤷♀️
I personally use ChatGPT to help me write copy for social media posts, blogs, podcasts, emails, etc - and it saves me lots of time and energy everyday.
BUT it is important to make sure that your AI-assisted copy aligns with your brand and avoids these recognizable AI tropes, whenever possible.
You don’t want people to see your posts and think, 'Oh, THAT was written by a robot’, right?
Your content should sound and look like it was crafted by a human (even if you had a little AI help).
Quick Fixes for ChatGPT Copy: Editing vs. Total Rewrite
The most common complaint I hear from ChatGPT-users is this:
“Whenever ChatGPT writes copy for me, it just doesn’t sound like me. I always end up rewriting it all anyway and wasting a bunch of time.”
This is where recognizing AI cliches (and doing quick edits) can come in handy!
There's a huge difference between editing and revising a piece of copy and doing a total rewrite.
When you start by editing out AI cliches, it immediately improves your content:
Get rid of overused words and repetitive statements
Change up the stuff that doesn’t make sense
Do a “quick cleanup job” first
This helps you not have to do a total rewrite every time.
Psst… Don’t forget the very first step to AI-Assisted copywriting!
The first step to getting ChatGPT to write copy that sounds like YOU is training it on your brand persona. When you train ChatGPT to understand who your brand is, who you're speaking to, and how you write copy, you’re more likely to get a response that sounds like your brand.

5 Common AI Cliches (and How to Fix Them)
1. Overusing Emojis
AI always goes overboard with emojis, and there’s really no avoiding it. You can try telling ChatGPT to only use specific emojis, and it will STILL sneak in the “🌈” or “🚀” or “🌿” emojis, I swear.
ChatGPT loves to use emojis that aren’t used that often. It also uses them WAY too frequently in a single piece of content. It’s even been known to double-up emojis (🏃♀️🎈) that just look, well, weird.
And here’s the thing: Emojis aren’t bad.
In fact, I encourage people to use emojis - especially to portray emotion or break up your copy visually. But you want to make sure your emoji usage reflects your brand.
So first, consider: What are my common brand emojis? How does my brand use emojis?
Then get rid of the weirdo AI-emojis and add emojis that reflect your brand’s style.
Specific Examples:
“Ready to drop a game-changing tip that will elevate your brand like never before. 🚀💎”
”It's about giving your audience something fresh every time they scroll.🌈📸”
“Variety makes your content exciting, relatable, and shareable!🌿💄”
How To Fix It:
Simply erase ALL of the ChatGPT emojis (this is usually my very first step). Then, add emojis in the style of your brand.
I’ll normally add my own emojis throughout the process of revising, instead of within the first step.
2. Cheesy Greetings
ChatGPT loves to start pieces of content with an overly enthusiastic greeting, such as, “Hey there, empowered entrepreneur!🌈💎”
And let’s be honest, it’s a little much.
Sometimes, greetings can be used in a purposeful way. If you’re speaking to a very specific segment of your audience, they can be great for capturing their attention.
But please, use these sparingly!!
You should not start every single piece of content with a greeting.
It's often better to dive straight into your purpose and topic. That's the best way to grab someone’s attention immediately.
So, get rid of those cheesy greetings, and get straight into the nitty gritty of your content.
Specific Examples:
“Hi there, Authentic Advocates and Entrepreneurs! 🚀”
”Why hello, fabulous small business owners and fellow content creators! 🌈”
“Hey, Glam Guys and Gals!💄”
How To Fix It:
Simply delete these greetings.
(OR if you do decide to use it, make sure it sounds authentic for your brand!)
3. Common “Power” Words
ChatGPT loves to use the same common “power words” over and over in its copy. These are words or phrases that aren’t really used that often in everyday language.
(that is, until AI started throwing them into every-freaking-thing it writes, and now, we’re starting to see them EVERYWHERE 😆)
These are words that just don’t sound natural in everyday conversation - especially when there’s a more common word that most, ahem, humans use instead.
FOR EXAMPLE:
ChatGPT loves to use the word “crucial”. It repeats the word over and over. Everything is CRUCIAL, according to AI. 😂
But what word do most humans use instead? “Important.” So, I will swap those two words, whenever I see “crucial” in AI-assisted copy.
Specific Examples:
“Crucial”
“Unlock”
“Unleash”
“The Power of”
“In a world”
“Boasts”
“Dive into”
“It’s not just about”
“Tapestry”
“Game-Changing”
“Think of it as”
and much more 😘
How To Fix It:
Be on the lookout for words that are repeated again and again and again, that don't sound natural and/or that you wouldn't normally use.
And have your own little word-swaps in your back pocket! Make the quick changes, and you'll be impressed by how quickly the copy sounds more like your brand.

4 Writing Style Crutches
ChatGPT often overuses specific writing style/structure crutches, and it can be hard to recognize at first. These “turns of phrase” can be compelling and add a little extra oomph to your writing.
But when they're overused, it can make your copy recognizable as AI-assisted. It can also get overly repetitive, long-winded, or even, boring.
You don’t need to fully avoid these “crutches” (or delete every single usage from your copy) but it’s important to find the right balance when using them in your content.
FOR EXAMPLE:
One of these writing style crutches is “It's not just about X; it's also about Y.”
This happens all the time in my ChatGPT-written copy. And at first, I'm totally into it - because this writing technique can feel really compelling and persuasive. But then, I see it repeated OVER and OVER, and I realize that it’s a common AI crutch.
So, I’ll just make sure I only use that technique one time per piece of copy. And I’ll make sure it’s not just “extra fluff” that should be deleted.
Specific Examples:
“It’s not just efficiency; it’s about effectiveness.”
”In this digital age…”
“Think of it like…”
and much more 😘
How To Fix It:
Start to notice those common writing crutches and stylistic techniques that ChatGPT uses.
Make sure you use them sparingly or in a balanced manner in your content.
5 Being Super Repetitive
ChatGPT will often say the same thing again and again, in multiple sentences in a row.
It can being very long-winded. It will often drag out the point it's trying to make, instead of simply making the point and moving on.
So, to put it simply: Cut the repetitive crap out of your AI-assisted copy.
Try not to get hung up on specific words or sentences that “sound good” but don’t serve the purpose. It’s common to feel attached to something in your writing, and feel reluctant about cutting it out. But it's better to be straightforward and get to the point and use less words.
Specific Examples:
“Leveraging AI like ChatGPT for content creation offers great benefits, enhancing efficiency and engagement. Yet, it's crucial to be mindful of AI's tendency to produce content that can sometimes appear repetitive or overly verbose. This redundancy can dilute the message's impact, emphasizing the need for content creators to carefully review and refine AI-generated outputs to ensure the final content remains clear, concise, and impactful.”
(yes, I did have ChatGPT write this example ;)
How To Fix It:
Cut the repetitive, long-winded and overly wordy crap out of your copy.
You'll find that you end up with a piece of copy that’s easier to read and sounds more like you.
So there you have it, my friend. Make sure that look out for these common AI tropes whenever you’re using ChatGPT or a similar AI tool for copywriting.
And remember: if you edit out these common tropes first, then I promise you will actually end up with copy that sounds more human and aligned.
